What Playloom Kids is
Playloom Kids teaches first English words to children aged 3 to 4 who can't read yet. Every day it picks a few short games for your child's age. Each game is a little routine of three or four steps, such as brushing a bear's teeth or feeding the animals, and each step is one simple gesture: a tap, a drag, or a rub. A warm narrator says every word, a hand shows what to do, and there is nothing to read, no score, no timer and no losing.
The games live in five places: the House, Number Hill, Wild Garden, Letter Tree and the Studio, each with a friend who lives there. The Studio is free play: stickers, painting, dressing up and music.
Questions grown-ups ask
- How do I get to the settings?
- Press and hold the small button in the top-right corner for two seconds. That opens the grown-ups' area, where you can see what your child has played and which words she has met, change the level or the number of games in a sitting, turn the music off, or reset progress. The hold is there so a child does not open it by accident.
- Does it need the internet?
- No. Nothing in the app ever goes online, so it works on a plane, in a car or anywhere without a signal.
- Is there anything to buy, or any ads?
- No. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no advertising of any kind.
- What happens to my child's information?
- Nothing is collected. Your child's progress stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. The full privacy policy is one page long.
- Why does my child see only a few games a day?
- On purpose. Research on how young children learn says a new word should come back on several different days in its first week, and that a short sitting with a clear ending is easier to stop than an endless feed. Today's games are picked for your child's age, and when they are played the day has a goodbye. The World is always one touch away for choosing freely.
- How does the app know my child's age?
- From the birth month and year you give when you set the app up. The age moves up by itself. You can also set the level by hand in the grown-ups' area.
- Can two children share the app?
- Not yet. The app keeps one child's progress. A second child can play, but the games shown follow the age you set up.
- The sound is quiet, or there is no sound.
- Check the ring/silent switch on the side of the iPhone and the volume buttons. The music can be turned off in the grown-ups' area under Settings, so check it is on there too.
- Can I move progress to a new device?
- Progress is part of your device's own backup. Restoring a new iPhone or iPad from that backup brings it along. We have no copy of it, so we cannot restore it for you.
